A tincture is an alcohol based product that generally needs to be diluted before application, or it will cause stinging. Tinctures tend to have more antiseptic properties due to their alcohol content.

An ointment is usually made with a petroleum derivative which helps moisturize the skin and is more difficult to wash off. Ointments are particularly useful for hand injuries when other applications may be washed off too easily.

A gel is less greasy than an ointment, can be washed off more easily, and allows the skin to breathe better.

A spray is usually made with glycerin and water or with isopropyl alcohol, both of which allow the skin to breathe but are easily washed off.

A lotion is a thin cream or liquid which helps to moisturize the skin.
